Muganga Earns Acclaim in France After Powerful Debut

By Racheal Nagawa | Senior Reporter, Business Express

Muganga: The One Who Treats, a deeply moving film that confronts the realities of sexual violence in conflict zones, has officially launched in France to widespread critical praise and strong audience reception. The film premiered in Paris before its nationwide theatrical release on 24 September, earning commendations from leading publications for its emotional depth and moral urgency.

Directed by Marie-Hélène Roux and co-written with Jean-René Lemoine, Muganga brings to the screen the life and work of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, alongside the powerful testimonies of Congolese women whose resilience lies at the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s ongoing humanitarian struggle.

The film offers an unflinching yet humane portrayal of sexual violence as a weapon of war, while honoring the courage of survivors and the unwavering commitment of Dr. Mukwege, often referred to as a “healer of minds and bodies.”

Critical Acclaim and Festival Recognition

French media have responded with strong approval. Le Monde described the production as a committed and necessary work exposing the use of sexual violence in the DRC, while Cineuropa hailed it as a poignant tribute both to survivors and to a man guided by conscience.

Earlier this year, the film garnered three prestigious Valois awards at the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival, including Best Actor for Isaach De Bankolé, the Audience Prize, and the Student Jury Prize—further cementing its standing within Francophone cinema.

De Bankolé delivers a compelling portrayal of Dr. Mukwege, supported by Vincent Macaigne as Dr. Guy-Bernard Cadière, presenting a narrative that balances harsh realities with moments of humanity and hope.

Global Advocacy and Industry Support

The film recently screened in London at a private event attended by Dr. Mukwege, members of the film team, and producer Angelina Jolie, who introduced the project. Jolie and Dr. Mukwege have worked together for over a decade advocating for accountability and an end to sexual violence in conflict.

In her remarks, Jolie described the film as urgent and powerful, reaffirming her commitment to amplifying the voices of survivors and highlighting Dr. Mukwege’s decades-long service to women and children in the DRC. She emphasized the need for global leaders to demonstrate the same courage and sustained commitment shown by frontline advocates and survivors.

Pan-African Investment in Storytelling

Muganga was financed by CANEX Creations Inc., a subsidiary of Afreximbank’s investment arm, the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA). Additional financial partners include Canal+, France 3 Cinéma, France Télévisions, CNC, and Scope Pictures.

According to Osahon Akpata, CEO of CANEX Creations Inc., the project exemplifies the organization’s mission to elevate African narratives on the global stage with authenticity and impact. He noted that supporting films such as Muganga reinforces a broader commitment to strengthening Africa’s creative industries and ensuring that stories rooted in the continent resonate internationally.

A Timely Global Conversation

At a time when women’s rights and humanitarian protections face renewed global challenges, the success of Muganga in France marks a significant step in amplifying awareness around conflict-related sexual violence. By blending cinematic artistry with advocacy, the film serves as both tribute and call to action.

Following its French release, Muganga is expected to continue its international rollout through festivals and special screenings, extending its message of resilience, justice, and hope to audiences worldwide.
